What is a Periodontist?

Periodontists are specialist dentists primarily concerned with the management of gum disease, implant placement and management of failing implants. Periodontists usually manage the simple to the more complex and challenging cases of gum disease and dental implant treatment.

The term Periodontist is a Specialist title. This means that the dentist in question is registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) as a Specialist in Periodontics. To be granted specialist status the dentist has to have fulfilled extensive requirements which usually takes the form of 3 to 4 years of extra training in a dental hospital where they have undergone guided training and regular examinations and quality assurance by the Hospital, awarding University and the Deanery. At the end of this process they are then put forward for specialist status and it is awarded by the GDC when deemed appropriate.
